Yeah, it was a technical triumph and perhaps the most successful...


...film I've ever seen in terms of putting the audience in the midst of the very literal, un-romanticized hell that is war.

And I wouldn't watch it again for $10,000. It is an undeniably great film that was also the most deeply unsettling moviegoing experience I have ever had. Just relentless hell with nowhere to hide.

In retrospect, I'm not all that surprised 1917 was upset tonight. Oscar voters respect tough films, but they don't like casting their Best Picture vote for films that are fundamentally unpleasant to watch.
